Explanatory Notes
Education Officer, Royal Botanic Gardens, Sydney
In September 1972 I started a feasibility study on an education service at the Royal Botanic Gardens. My report recommended such a service and I began as full-time Education Officer at the Gardens in 1973. I left this position and full-time teaching in January 1977.
During my time as Education Officer I established the education service and developed all the lesson plans and worksheets for school visits to the Gardens. I also developed self-guided tours for the public and organised guided tours for the public. I catered for and gave lessons and tours to students ranging from Primary School through Secondary School to University level Botany students.

Preschool and Primary School Experience
As well as my involvement with Primary School students at the Botanic Gardens and in music teaching mentioned elsewhere, I have been involved in a number of other areas of Primary teaching as a parent helper:

  • Cooking sessions with kindergarten students.
  • Science sessions with years 3-6.
Both of these sessions ran for about half to one hour each week at Blakehurst Primary School. For three years I was registered with the Family Day Care Centre as a Day Care Mother, caring for a total of 17 babies and preschoolers over this time.

Music Teaching
Babies to Lower Primary:
Whilst living in London for 12 months while my husband had an overseas posting (1983-84) I had training and experience at teaching music appreciation to small children both at home and school level. Enjoyment of music was the main aim of my teaching and this was extended from weekly sessions singing and making music together to helping with production of musicals both at the Queen's School, Kew and privately with Mrs Mary Noyes. On returning to Australia I began similar music appreciation sessions for babies, toddlers, preschoolers and lower primary students.

Guitar Teaching:
In 1984 I began teaching guitar to adults and from there extended this to school students from Year 4 up. Teaching was done in small group sessions both at my home and at various schools where students have lunchtime or before school lessons. The schools involved were Blakehurst Primary School, St Finbars School, Sans Souci and St Thomas Mores School, Brighton. The course I offer extends over 3 years and extra work can be added after this if required. Both folk and classical styles for acoustic guitar are covered.
